The answer is simple. They’re curious. Children use a line of questioning to help them make better sense of the world and their experiences. That’s all and well, of course… but the thing is, toddlers don’t often stop with just one question! They would keep a whole series of inquiries ready for firing. (And let’s be honest, answering numerous questions at a time can be a lot to handle.) To help you out, Alphabet Academy has prepared a short guide on the matter:
How should you answer to it?
To keep the conversation in control, you can…
- Pass the question
If your partner is in the vicinity, try lobbying the question over to him/her. Doing so will not only put you out of the hot seat, but it will also encourage participation from the whole family. You can also resort to throwing the question back at your little one. You’d be surprised by the answers they can come up with! - Give commentary
Rather than give the answer point blank, reiterate. Give your little one a couple of clues that will help them come to a conclusion. This will encourage them to think and do a bit of fact-finding on their own. - Search for the answer together
It’s okay not to have all the answers all the time. If you’re not sure how to respond to a question, consider doing a bit of research on the internet with your child. Not only will this count as a great bonding activity, but you will also learn a couple of fun trivia, too!
Why should you encourage asking “why”?
This behavior in your little one should be urged because…
- It inspires learning
Smart children aren’t born smart. Rather, they are fostered in an environment that encourages learning. If you want your little one to grow up witty and smart, then entertaining their why questions is a good way to start. And if you’d like to further your little one’s learning up a notch, you can enroll them in our Child Care in Denton, Texas! - It promotes creativity
The answer to “Why?” isn’t always black or white. Rather, there is a degree of abstraction involved. This eventually shapes your child’s imagination and unlocks their prowess for creativity. - It enhances cognitive skills
Cognitive skills give rise to reading comprehension, critical thinking, problem-solving, logic and other abilities that are needed not just for school readiness, but for everyday life as well.
Aside from asking “why” questions, you can also help develop your child’s cognitive skills by enrolling them in our Daycare Center! (Reach out to us and we’ll give you a tour!)
